JESUS’ AUTHORITY

Today, the Mother church invites the people of God to celebrate the feast of Ascension. During this feast, the faithful are reminded that Jesus who is in union with the Father from eternity “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1) and became man “And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14a), has the authority over all the created beings and he give them eternal life, “Just as you gave him authority over all people so that he may give eternal life to all you have him” (John 17:2).

Jesus has the authority on earth i.e., he has the authority to create all things in the world. He did not only create the things but gave them life, “All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life” (Jn 1:3a) and sustain them through his words, “he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word” (Hebrew 1:2-3). Jesus has authority over Satan and his demons, “Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him” (Mark 1: 25-26).

Jesus also have the authority on heaven as Paul confessed “He [God] worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come” (Ephesians 1:21-22) and through Jesus Christ, the faithful are allowed to enter in the New Jerusalem where the Lamb of God: Jesus (John 1:29) has overcome on the beast and won the war, “They will fight with the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and king of kings, and those with him are called, chosen, and faithful” (Revelation 17:14).

Now the Ascension of the Lord does not only mean that Jesus has authority over all things and he has returned to the Father and taken his royal throne, but Jesus has given this authority to the apostles particularly to Peter to continue the messianic mission, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19), so that whoever believe in Jesus and receives the sacrament of baptism may enter into the kingdom of God where Jesus has authority over all things, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:18-19).

May Mary the Mother of Jesus who accepted the authority of Jesus, by keeping Jesus first in her heart and later in her womb intercedes for the people of God to believe in Jesus’ authority to obtain eternal life.
